“Dower and Dowry: Women, Property, & Legal Records”

Bringing property into marriage or trying to take it out, our female ancestors were governed by laws that generated valuable records. Learn about the common law dower and the civil law dowry, how they differed, and how to find the stories the records tell.
A genealogist with a law degree, The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a lecturer, educator and writer who provides expert guidance through the murky territory where genealogy, history and law come together. She holds credentials as Certified Genealogist® and Certified Genealogical LecturerSM from the Board for Certification of Genealogists, for which she serves as a trustee. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society, the Association of Professional Genealogists and numerous other national, state and local genealogical societies. She is an internationally-acclaimed speaker and a course coordinator and instructor at the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records (Gen-Fed) at the National Archives, the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) at the University of Georgia, and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG).

“The New VCGS Website”
VCGS will be moving to a new website and member management platform in May. This new and improved website will provide us with full control and lower costs to maintain our website and the thou- sands of historical records contained therein. The new site has greater search capabilities, an updated look and feel, and more automated member man- agement (for those who join or renew online). Be sure to stick around for this workshop to see the new site and learn the many improved features the site has to offer.

All our monthly lectures and workshops are free to our members and the public. Non-members should request a Zoom invitation here.

The DNA Special Interest Group meeting will precede the general meeting from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM on Zoom. Contact the webmaster to be added to the invitation list.
