"Adoption, Deception, Divorce, Desertion, and DNA; Finding a Grandfather for Dave"

This case study begins with a flawed birth certificate and takes the researcher on a merry chase through eight states and a multitude of diverse records. We then look at DNA to search out a biological grandfather.

Cheryl has been researching her family since the 1980s. For over twenty years she served the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society as President, Seminar Chair, and Program Chair. She became a certified genealogist in 2016 after submitting an extensive portfolio. Along with Cafi Cohen she now teaches genealogy classes in Arroyo Grande. Her main goal today is linking the generations with proof statements, summaries, or detailed proof arguments. She is also attempting to clean out her huge collection of pictures and documents. Wish her luck.

"Big City, Common Surname: A Family for John Kelly"

Murdered on the streets of New York in 1876, John Kelly could have been any one of 100+ John Kellys in that year's city directory. With a death certificate that did not name parents, how can his family be identified? Using John Kelly's case as a jumping-off point, this presentation outlines helpful techniques for any big city research as well as common name research in any location.

Cafi Cohen earned degrees in chemistry and medical technology from UCLA and the University of North Dakota, and spent many years in a variety of pursuits – from laboratory research and piano teaching to promoting home education as a nationwide speaker and author of books on homeschooling. In 1995 Cafi began researching her family to learn about her maternal grandmother. Within a year, she was hooked on growing her family tree. She has followed her ancestral lines from California, the Midwest, the old south, and New England to Scotland, France, Germany, Ireland, and Italy. Researching her husband’s Jewish family—immigrants from Poland, Romania, and Russia to New York City and Texas—broadened her experience. In addition, since 2005, Cafi has completed more than 30 family history books for clients, whose ancestors hailed from diverse locations, including St. Louis, Houston, Pittsburgh, New York City, Kentucky, Hawaii, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ireland, England, and Germany. As Education Chairperson of the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society, Cafi has presented many sessions on research techniques and Internet genealogy. She enjoys coaching fellow genealogists by helping them organize, search the Internet, develop goals, and complete projects.
