Farmers in the Era of the Homestead Act: Useful Websites - Weds Class
10:30 am to 11:30 am
Camarillo Library, 4101 Las Posas Rd, Camarillo
Jean Hibbins recently told us we need to stop dismissing our farmer ancestors as "just farmers." Lyn was inspired to find out more about her farmers, and this class will give us a start on the range of resources online that will enrich our knowledge about farming as it was defined in the era of homesteading. We will learn how to use websites that help us locate our farmer ancestor's land and also give us information that provides a better picture of what that farm was like--records on Ancestry, on the BLM website, on FarmilySearch, and on the National Archives website. This is a basic introduction to public lands homesteading that can help us better understand the records and what our homesteaders went through to build their farms.

10:30 am to 11:30 am
Camarillo Library, 2nd Floor Computer Classroom, 4101 Las Posas Rd, Camarillo
Lyn will present two case studies demonstrating paths she and Ken used for researching female ancestors. Neither had to go to women-specific sources, though doing so could enrich both stories; all sources are useful for finding both men and women. There are many possibilities for doing this, as Gena Philibert-Ortega recently showed us in our Saturday program. It just takes being a persistent detective! You can add to our discussion by joining us and sharing how you unearthed information about the women on your family tree.
